Why Women Should Lift Weights

Why Women Should Lift Weights

Weightlifting won't get you bulky or turn you into a she-hulk. But you will gain confidence, self-esteem, and a bangin' body.

Think the key to a fit physique is strict cardio? Think again.

How do I know? Six years ago I was a pudgy stay-at-home mom. I'd always been active, but for me, that really meant running, yoga, and the occasional "play with light dumbbells" session at the gym. I could never understand why I didn't have the lean, athletic, feminine body I yearned for. I spent hours at the gym and I was always consistent.

The answer came to me in the form of iron, and since then, the iron and I have been the best of friends. I have a more desirable physique at 30 than I did at 20, and I feel better about myself in every conceivable way.

While I am blessed to coach and inspire many women around the world who appreciate and engage in regular strength training, I'm not ignorant to the fact there are still a lot myths and misunderstandings surrounding women and heavy weight training.

But before I talk about why those ideas are myths rather than truths, let's talk about the myriad benefits that lifting weights provides.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO BE STRONG?

Metabolism and muscles: First, and perhaps most cogent, is the effect that lifting weights has on fat loss. The more muscle a woman has, the more calories she will burn at rest. So, basically, muscles speed up your metabolism, resulting in more effective fat loss.

Bone health: Many studies have shown that lifting weights regularly can increase bone density. Those of us in our 20s and 30s don't think about this often, but someday you will. And won't you be so proud of yourself that you lifted weights and cared for your bone density before you even knew you needed to?

Dumbbell Squat

Independence: Being strong makes everything easier. You know that furniture you need moved? Well, now you can do it yourself. How about those 15 bags of groceries? One trip from car to home—all you, girl.

I remember the moment I realized how important my strength was to my independence. I had just bought a twin bed for my son when he grew out of his toddler bed, and I didn't have anyone to help me carry it into my apartment. I lugged it out of the back of my SUV and proceeded to carry it along the sidewalk, up the stairs, down the stairs and finally into his bedroom. It was exhausting, but I did it all by myself. To me, that kind of strength is priceless.

Confidence: Strong girls exude a confidence that is intoxicating. I happen to believe that this comes from the knowledge that you can accomplish pretty impressive feats at the gym. When you realize your outer strength, you can tap into your inner strength, and that begins to radiate. Confidence is a very attractive quality, and that gym confidence starts to leak into every other aspect of life.

I always say, if you can crush it in the gym, you can crush it at life.

Barbell Deadlift

GIRL, YOU WON'T GET BULKY. HERE'S WHY.

Hormones: Most women simply do not possess the level of testosterone necessary to support a bulky physique. Furthermore, any woman who does have a massively muscular physique is probably supplementing with hormones. While we all have different genetics, and some of us are prone to having more muscle density than others, as a general rule you have to train for bulk to get bulk.

Ask any bodybuilder and they will tell you that gaining muscle isn't easy. You won't turn into a she-hulk just because you perform squats with your body weight, but you will end up with a righteous backside.

Training model: Along those same lines as genetics, the way you train will play a significant role in determining how your body develops. Hypertrophy (increased bulk) is not as easy as you might think, and most bodybuilders work incredibly hard to make sure their training program supports maximum muscle growth in as short a time span as possible.

Jump Squat

I train a lot of women, and not a single one has come to me with the complaint that they are too bulky. As a general rule, most women I train are put on 3-5 workouts per week consisting of full-body free-weight training (squats, lunges, deadlifts, pull-ups, push-ups, rows, presses), kettlebell training (swings, snatches), and interval training.

The key is to utilize as many compound, combination, and full-body movements as possible, so that we're increasing lean mass and decreasing fat simultaneously, rather than isolating muscle groups to increase their size.

Of course, much of this is dependent upon your diet, and a bulking diet looks far different than a solid nutritional protocol for a woman on a fat-loss program. The bottom line is that the way you eat and train will determine how your body develops. A full-body training program and a diet rich in protein, veggies, and healthy fats is an effective path toward fat loss and strength for most women.

SO NOW WHAT?

Maybe I've convinced you. Perhaps now, you're thinking you're going to toss your three-pound weights, hop off the elliptical, and give this whole strength thing a shot. Where should you begin?

The following three-workouts-per-week program is a great place for beginners to realize their strength potential and start their body transformation.

The following three-workouts-per-week program is a great place for beginners to realize their strength potential and start their body transformation. I recommend beginning each training session with dynamic mobility, glute bridges, planks, and Turkish get-ups. Now get up and get after it!

Why Putting Coconut Oil in Your Coffee Can Help You Lose Weight

Why Putting Coconut Oil in Your Coffee Can Help You Lose Weight

50 Amazing Uses for Coconut Oil Coconut oil is one of those “it” products right now that has u… Read »

Others commented on it first. I travel a lot, so I don’t see the same people consistently for sometimes months or even years, and therefore hesitate to take notice of compliments. After all, perceived weight loss can often be traced back to a new haircut.

However, this weekend I returned to my childhood home where my reserve wardrobe lay in wait. I slipped on a pair of old British Racing Green skinny jeans and to my surprise, they slid right off! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I remember these jeans being extremely form-fitting when I bought them a few years ago but it seems my body, along with my life, has undergone a metamorphosis since then.

I am someone who always struggled with their weight. I always had hang-ups over what I looked like and forever felt like I was packing a few extra pounds. Even my best efforts to slim down didn’t do much to change my body shape. So ultimately I gave up. I decided life was too short for diets and went on to eat what I wanted. There was one condition: whatever I ate was a conscious choice, and I cut out any crap.

My basic policy was ‘if it didn’t grow in the ground or fall off a tree’ I wasn’t interested. My aim was to eat as whole and natural as possible. I also relaxed the guilt and anxiety around food, because I felt comforted by the knowledge that I was eating well, for health and for energy, so if a little chocolate slipped in I wouldn’t worry about it.

For a while, I felt better, but looked the same.

Then, almost a year ago, I started to drink my coffee with coconut oil, butter and a little honey in it. I’d read something about ‘Bulletproof’ coffee and was curious. I always struggled with blood sugar spikes as a result of having a cup of Joe and apparently the oils help slow down the impact of the caffeine.

I’ve also come to learn through Ayurveda that including more fats in my life would be beneficial.

Recommended read: Everything You Need to Know About Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the traditional healing system in India, recognizes that everything in existence is made up of 5 elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Space. These elements partner together to form ‘doshas’ or ‘types’ that influence our physical attributes and mental characteristics.

Vata is the dosha of Air and Space. Its qualities are dry and cold, so oils (among other things) help smooth and ground Vata. Pitta is Fire and Water. Its qualities are heat and intensity. It is a good idea to cool and soothe Pitta with good quality dairy and things like cucumber. Kappa is the pairing of Earth and Water. Its qualities are heavy and slow. To balance Kapha, lighter foods and warming, stimulating spices are recommended. So for me, a classic Vata/Pitta mix, oils in my coffee help to ground my airy Vata brain, smooth my poor airy Vata digestion and cool my Pitta hyperactivity.

I love anything that has a rich and creamy flavor and I’d tried butter tea when I was traveling in the Himalayas, so the concept didn’t disgust me.

Fast forward a few months and without having measured it ‘officially’ I can see that my body fat ratio has dropped quite dramatically and my weight is yo-yoing a lot less.

It’s hard to say for sure if it’s my modified morning coffee that has caused this change in my curves or not, but it’s the only new habit I have adopted consistently that could be responsible for my shrinking waistline.

The official line on ‘Bulletproof’ coffee is that it is supposed to provide a prolonged energy hit, sharpen your focus and keep you feeling full. Apparently the caffeine combine with the fats to slowly release it’s effects into the body over a longer period of time.

According to David Asprey, the mastermind behind the mix, we should use coffee brewed with low-toxin beans as much as possible, then combine it with unsalted grass-fed butter, plus MCT oil, such as coconut oil, that is rumored to have fat-burning properties. It’s important to use quality coconut oil, which you can shop here.

MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, which occur naturally in coconut oil. Upon doing a little research, I found that athletes swear MCTs not only give them more energy, but improve their metabolism and ability to burn fat too. Try this high-quality MCT oil from Onnit, which you can buy here.

According to Dr. Laurie Cullen at the Women’s Institute, when MCTs are absorbed into the blood stream, they bypass the digestion process that longer chain fats go through. MCTs provide quick energy for the body and are thus less likely to be stored in the fat cells. Furthermore, Dr. Cullen says that when a meal includes medium chain triglycerides, there is a significant increase in the number of calories burned (thermogenic effect). When more calories are used, fewer are stored as fat, which helps to reduce body fat levels.

Go figure.

I’ve also noticed other things since going ‘Bulletproof’ like better blood sugar control, better digestion, smoother skin and a more radiant complexion, glossier hair and nicer nails. So whether my weight loss is down to my revised coffee ritual or not, I will continue to put the extras in my mug!

Here is how you make it (the simple way):

  1. Brew a cup of your favorite low toxin coffee. If you’re looking for a new fave, try this!
  2. Add in 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil (start with 1 and work your way up to 2).
  3. Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee.
  4. Drink it up!

Why eating fat doesn’t make you fat

Why eating fat doesn’t make you fat

Sugars and grains have destroyed our bodies and are to blame for so many of the issues we have today including obesity. Chemical filled low-fat alternatives to real foods are a myth the food industry has perpetuated for years.

I have been eating about a 90% no sugar, no grains diet and I have never felt better. No bloating. No joint pain. I have so much energy! And the best part is I don’t crave sugar or grains AT ALL. In fact I have completely reprogrammed my body where I now have an aversion to those foods. I just can’t eat them.

I spent so many years operating at 50-75% health. It became normal. But now that I know what 100% feels like I can’t believe I ever tolerated feeling anything less, but until you have something to compare it to, you don’t realize it.

Whole Body Cleanse

Whole Body Cleanse

Please take time to enjoy the video above, I know you’ll learn a great deal about cleansing and detox.

If you’re getting tired of feeling run and lacking energy, perhaps it’s time you tried a whole body cleanse. Now I know what you’re thinking; cleansing sounds so radical and regimented, and you may be a little apprehensive about trying something like this.

There has been and lot of misinformation and controversy around cleansing and detox lately. Famous celebrities have brought cleanse programs into the spotlight recently, but as a result of that there have been many crazy diets and routines that have surfaced.

While a cleanse program can be strict and rigid, you’ll have a better chance at succeeding with your detox efforts if you choose a routine that is all natural and

doesn’t involve any magic pills or potions. And while we’re at it here, let’s dispel a few myths surrounding cleansing and detox in general.

frujitveggiessmall

Myth #1 – Cleansing means you can’t spend too much time far away from the bathroom. Most people naturally assume that because your body is undergoing a purging of unwanted toxins and waste, that you’ll spend all your waking hours within sprinting distance of the bathroom. Nothing could be further from the truth, especially if you choose the correct detox program. While you may experience some changes in your bathroom habits, especially at first, by no means will you be glued to the bowl.

Most people’s imagination takes over here and they envision something quite horrible when in fact quite the opposite is true.

Myth #2 – You will experience a definite lack of energy. Wrong again! You will most certainly notice changes, but they will be positive changes. Sure, like anything different, there may be changes that you are wondering about as you begin your detox, but again, if you’ve chosen the right program all of this will be expected and explained to you, and I guarantee it won’t be as bad as you’re imagining.

Again, the hype and misinformation surrounding the act of detoxification is running rampant.

Don’t let it deter you in your quest for a healthier life.

Myth #3 Cleanses are a liquid diet. Again, another piece of misinformation. Any cleanse that prescribes only liquids is sure to have you feeling hungry, lacking energy and quite discouraged. Most detox routines that are effective and safe are actually adding things to your daily intake of food.

The difference will be that it is wholesome and probably organic material that will enhance your health and vitality. Personally I would steer clear of any cleanse program that advises all liquids and no solid foods.

You shouldn’t be hungry while doing a detox program, because it will only increase your chances of falling out of the routine and going back to your old habits. Steer clear of any programs that have you drinking spicy concoctions and starving yourself.

As with all changes in your normal routine, a quick check with your doctor may be in order. Your health care professional will be able to tell you if they foresee any problems.

If you’re thinking of doing a cleanse, make sure you do your research. There are many programs that will actually harm your health instead of improving it. When it was time for my detox, I turned to my personal fitness and nutrition hero, Yuri Elkaim. His experience and reputation in the health industry is second to none, and one of his products, the Total Wellness Cleanse, is perfect for a natural and safe detox.

If you’re thinking of a whole body cleanse, be sure to check out Yuri’s program. It worked for me, and you can check out the many testimonials on his site to see all the other satisfied people as well.

What to Do All Day Long to Lose Weight Fast

What to Do All Day Long to Lose Weight Fast

Losing weight isn't about doing one good thing like going for a run or throwing kale in your smoothie — it's made up of a million healthy choices that you make all day long, every day. Don't view this as a burden; view it as a fun challenge! Every hour is an opportunity to do something that can bring you closer to your weight goal. So tomorrow, when you wake up, here's your around-the-clock guide to feeling slimmer by bedtime.

Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Glen Giffen

6 a.m. — Wake up, and sip a big glass of water. It'll fill you up and get things moving to prevent belly bloat. Eat a small snack that offers quick carbs and a little protein such as half a banana and a few almonds — eating first thing jump-starts the metabolism. Now go work out! Morning exercisers tend to work out longer and more intensely than those who sweat it out during other times of the day. Plus, it'll keep the fire lit under your metabolism, so you burn more calories throughout the day.

7 a.m. — Do some stretches in the shower. Eat a filling breakfast that includes protein and fiber — at least 10 grams of each. Don't be afraid to fill up on healthy carbs, because enjoying them in the beginning of the day ensures you'll have time to burn them off.

8 a.m. — Make your lunch for later. These lunch-packing tips will help you lose weight.

9 a.m. — Fill your reusable water bottle once you arrive at work. Sip on it throughout the morning, since staying hydrated will prevent hunger pangs.

10 a.m. — Take a break from work to snack on some belly-filling fiber. Keep it under 150 calories like these snacks.

11 a.m. — Take a few minutes to fill in your food and fitness journal, writing down what you've eaten and how much you've exercised. It'll give you an idea of how many calories you're allowed the rest of the day, and seeing your stats from the previous weeks will motivate you to stay on the healthy path.

12 p.m. — Get moving by going for a walk with a co-worker, ride your bike to run an errand, or grab that set of dumbbells under your desk and do these strength-training moves.

Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Jenny Sugar

1 p.m. — Eat a healthy lunch that you packed from home that includes low-fat protein, fiber, fresh veggies, whole grains, and fruit for dessert. Enjoy it with nature's calorie-free beverage.

2 p.m. — Take that afternoon meeting for a walk. Whether you're on the phone or meeting in person, walking and talking can help you think more clearly while burning some calories.

3 p.m. — Have a 150-calorie snack to keep energy levels going till dinner. This could include a little something sweet like these 150-calorie desserts since indulging a little can prevent overeating later.

4 p.m. — Sip some green tea. The caffeine will give you a little pep, and green tea has been shown to suppress your appetite and increase your metabolism.

5 p.m. — Walk or bike home from work. Not only will it burn some calories, but it can also relieve work stress, which can trigger overeating.

6 p.m. — Make a low-cal dinner filled with veggies, low-fat protein, and whole grains. Here are some vegetarian options under 300 calories. After dinner is made, put away leftovers before sitting down to eat to prevent going back for unnecessary seconds.

7 p.m. — Brush your teeth while doing this two-minute butt-and-leg workout. It'll tone your tush, and that minty breath will prevent mindless late-night snacking.

Source: POPSUGAR Photography

8 p.m. — If you like to relax in front of the TV, do these strength-training moves during commercial breaks.

9 p.m. — Get your workout gear ready for tomorrow morning. Slip into your PJs, and do these yoga poses to encourage sleepiness.

10 p.m. — Snuggle into bed on your way to dreamland. Getting enough sleep is proven to help with weight loss.
