12 Comfort Foods Made Good-For-You

As the temperature drops, our cravings for warm and cozy foods rise. But don’t unbutton those jeans just yet! Indulging in your favorite foods doesn’t mean you have to compromise your diet. Check out these 12 twists to heart-warming comfort foods, just like mom used to make!

Cauliflower Pizza

1. Cauliflower Pizza from Skinny Mom: Pizza is an all time favorite of mine, but it definitely doesn’t help my waistline. This cauliflower thin crust helps transform your pizza from high carb to healthy. For an even healthier meal, swap the sausage or pepperoni for leaner turkey versions or go the garden vegetable route.

spinach mac n cheese

2. Baked Mac & Cheese from Eating Well: No comfort food list is complete without a delicious mac n’ cheese recipe. This one is really easy, and is a great source of vitamin A, protein and calcium! (photo credit)

3. Spaghetti Squash with Turkey Meatballs from Skinny Mom: I was a little hesitant when I first tried this meal because I’ve never been a big fan of squash, but this meal was a delicious surprise! It has all the same great taste of regular spaghetti without all the calories or carbs.

healthyslaw

4. Cole Slaw from Skinny Mom: Who doesn’t love a cold side of slaw with their meal? This side is great because you can eat it guilt-free! My favorite way to include skinny slaw is on my slimmed down version of Blue Cheese Stuffed Buffalo Burgers!

chicken pot pie

5. Chicken Pot Pie from Food Network: This dish is creamy and super easy to make. To cut down your cooking time, cook your chicken ahead of time, or buy an already cooked chicken and shred it!

6. Skinny Nutty Chicken from Skinny Mom: An amazing meal for both adults and kids. You’ll get the same great chicken tender taste but without all the deep fried guilt. I love to kick this taste up with some hot sauce on the side. YUM!

lasagna

7. Lasagna With Spinach from Delish: Lasagna is all about the perfect ratio of cheese, filling, sauce and noodles. This recipe adds spinach, which is a great way to get picky eaters to eat their vegetables. Add sautéed mushrooms on top to make it even better! (photo credit)

beef-stroganoff_s4x3

8. Beef Stroganoff With Yogurt and Dill from Real Simple: This meal is simply mouthwatering. Don’t let the name fool you, because you can hardly tell the difference of using yogurt instead of sour cream. Enjoy! (photo credit)

chicken fried steak

9. Chicken Fried Steak & Gravy from Eating Well: Is it really possible to enjoy chicken fried steak without the saturated fat and sodium? You bet! This recipe skips the deep frying, has less than one-third of the fat, and 80 percent less sodium! (photo credit)

Chicken Noodle Soup

10. Chicken Noodle Soup from My Recipes: Chicken noodle soup is a meal in itself. It’s filled with protein, carbs, vitamins and nutrients. Cook a large batch and you’ll have leftovers for the rest of the week!

meatloaf

11. Meatloaf from Eating Well: This is a great healthy alternative to the classic. It’s definitely worth the extra effort, and is very appetizing when served with mashed cauliflower (a skinny swap to mashed potatoes).

chicken pot pie

12. Chicken and Vegetable Pot Pie from Real Simple: It takes a little bit of preparation, but you will not be disappointed. I like to add a lot of different vegetables, like broccoli and peas. My ultimate comfort food! (photo credit)
